[attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ This feedback loop between this odd couple was garnering attention now, how they seemed to follow each other's trains of thought and sentences, how each show of excitement was met with more excitment, but Keiko could only lean in so far, otherwise she would need tiptoes she didn't have. That look in his eye as he evaluated her strategy was a judgement that actually mattered to her, strangely. Math was so predictable, as was most school work, but this game was something she had no mastery of so to hear it from someone who was clearly skilled meant something. A weird feeling to have over a children's card game. At the compliment, the two shared this very mutual stare of understanding, and this feeling deep in her chest of need, of need for this sort of dialogue and genuine excitement. This mental stimulation was exhuberant, but she couldn't take it anymore, looking off to the side before his stare burned a hole in her head. "I didn't take you for a flatterer, Mr. Yoshimasa. But that was a very good attempt." Again, that coy tone escaped her again; that was also very new. When she cut her eyes back to meet him, he seemed preoccupied with finding cards again, no doubt to challenge her to make an observation on it. He looked more pensive though. He produced a Wetlands card and slid it over as he pondered over the second in his hand. "Hah, I could swear by looking outside you have used this today," she muttered lightly, amused with her almost-telling joke. "When I was first learning, there were a lot of elementary school kids that absolutely wrecked havoc on me." The second question though hinted at something more, something that had perturbed him. Probably that same something that was the cause of that nigh-terminal case of river brooding earlier. She gave a light sigh and responded again with two cards. "Ever since I lost my match with a truck , every match feels like it could go better." She chuckled this time, indulging in her very rare mood for gallows humor. She then took to calling over one of the wait staff, but she seemed a little busy at the moment. Long enough for Keiko push the cards across to him to look at. "But all you can do then is lick your wounds, take your time to learn, and try again." She offered a smile to him before turning to the waitress from earlier, eagerly clutching her notepad. She seemed relieved that they were going to finally order. "I'll have a parfait and a cream soda. Yun?"She'd let the formalities go just for now to allow him to absorb her choice of cards: a Replenish and a Meta Cocoon. --- Vulcan had little time to absorb what was happening, with rapid metal footsteps blending with the rain and him looking the wrong direction. It was the jump that alerted him, hearing that cape fly angrily against the oppresive, damnable weather. This would not do, not at all. He could not afford a conflict out in the street. He traced his steps back, taking to floating towards the alley by the bathroom. It was on the opposite side of the building where Keiko was busy yammering away with some stranger. No. No, stay in the game. He repeated this over and over, not questioning why this was happening, but what to do. It was Keiko's job to think. It was his job to do as ordered and her Order of Defense still rang true after 2 years. He would not fight in the open. Just a another meter. Yes. He touched down, pivoted on one of his teeth, then threw his hand with a resounding "OVERCLOCK!", rain barely coming to contact before evaporating into steam as thunder crashed again. Hopefully he had timed that right. All he could do was hope right now. Hope that his metal was better tempered and that this opponent would get bored. [attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]Keiko Kojima... The longer Yun continued to pass the time with her, the stronger her aura of mystery grew. Well-mannered, considerate, exceptionally observant, and she even had a sense of humor. Somehow, it made the wheelchair-bound girl even more alluring on a logical, reason-oriented front. Card games were one thing, but human beings were the most difficult puzzles of all to solve. Her candid response to Yun's subtext-laden question left the duelist feeling visibly blindsided, his shoulders slumping forward somewhat. So, her condition was not rooted in terminal illness, but in an event that was both sudden and just as jarring... Images of the muscular man in the yellow jacket, once again, haunt Yun like a specter that simply refuses to leave. How does she do it? Where does her strength to move forward originate from? What kind of resolve was needed to endure the apparent loss of the function in her legs? Yun takes an offhand glance towards the floor, and sees them. The scars on Keiko's legs. They were mostly faded, but still there, a permanent reminder of her own losses, now readily visible beneath the shop's white halogen lights. The gamer's heart sinks even lower. But the girl in pink experiences no change in her temperament, the tone of her voice remaining even and collected. Her conclusion is so simple and honest it nearly hurts the duelist to admit it so readily. She lowers two more cards for him to study, Replenish and Meta Cocoon, to reinforce her truth as reality. Lick his wounds and try again, huh? As he mulls over Miss Kojima's words of wisdom, amethyst eyes find their way to the very last card in Yun's hand. Feather Fall. Above it was Hyper Wing, his favorite augment card. It was as though his own deck was giving him a subliminal message to accept Keiko's compassion in this moment, to embrace it, for he certainly needed a grounding force right now. This little girl, confined to the cold metal space of her wheelchair, had seemingly freed herself of all its burdens. Now, it was his turn to break his own chains. Yun's crooked golden highlights shift in front of the spiky mass of black and purple hair, partially concealing another contemplative smirk that now formed against his pale features. Whatever her actual intentions were, he simply cannot bring himself to refuse her gestures of kindness. This evening, he needed all the help he could get. " Strawberry cheesecake," Yun says. " And a raspberry espresso." --- The sound of rain being torn to shreds fills Zubamon's ears before it morphs into a distinctive CLANG, his metallic claws scraping angrily against the street. The dragon lifts his head, his sharpened horn buzzing as he did so, and spots the glowing Solarmon hover its way frantically back into an alley. Then, his body seems to burn with greater intensity until the heavy rainfall can get no closer before being turned into fine mist particles, almost as if a barrier of water molecules now surrounded him. It was a telltale sign--at least, for the caped dragon--that his opponent was about to unleash an attack. Unfortunately for Zubamon, his opening was too aggressive, too direct, and a cog-shaped hand charged with thermal energy comes crunching into his face just hard enough to cause him to stagger a few steps, his head (and probably his brain, too) echoing with a resounding metallic clang. Zubamon's vision spins, obscured by both rain and pain. He even buckles to a knee, uncertain as to how or why he was not faster than this floating collective of gears and springs. It yells something inane, and the dragon lets off a reverberating snarl. Instantly, his form appears to bleed and melt into the rainstorm itself, the reflective properties of every last droplet of water to create the distinctive, rapid-fire flickering his golden armor was known to produce before his posture of temporary relief became a threatening crouch. Zubamon darts towards the alleyway, both claws poised for attack, and then-- He feints, slipping neatly to the left as the shimmering cape attached to his shoulders flutters behind him, like the red capoté of a Spanish matador mocking the bull after a reckless charge. Except if Zubamon were the matador doing the charging himself, hoping to get the drop on the Solarmon with a rising double claw attack. 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink. When consumed, it raises that target's Strength by 2 for a duration of 3 turns. 2: BRAIN BOOSTER - Increases the size of one Digimon's brain by a slight amount. Deals moderate Thunder damage. 14: DRAMON KILLER W - The user equips WarGreymon's Dramon Killer gauntlets. All Digimon with the "-dramon" suffix in their name will take doubled damage from all attacks that come into physical contact. This stacks with weaknesses. Has a 3 turn duration. [attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ It was slight, but as soon as Yun had looked down, she wanted to hide them. Her hand clenched, even with such a nonchalant glance. Then again, this is why she had worn the shorts...wait, no. She wanted to show Yukira what she'd done, but at this point it had traveled beyond that. That was just a desperate grab at what she really needed: closure. Keiko was going to remark on how still she was learning, but without that closure, that wound was still open. She still hurt when people looked at that chair, her legs, but she just hid it well. Yet, the way he looked at her... She wouldn't stop playing this part, even for the sake of honesty. That look had a bit of desperation in it, a bit of need. Keiko wanted nothing more than to be needed. There was also no other person who seemed they needed it, needed her, more. Though, she was grateful for what little luck she had today. She started to think in Yu's terms, at least she surmised, that cards 'spoke' in a way. How they could shape a deck to have it's own personality. It was clear to her by a particular card in her hand what she was at her core: Drill Shell A. That was little harsh, Children's Card God. Yet, the truth in it was immense. Locked in her shell. Hoping those turns just last forever till she's ready. She gave a sigh, both weary and relaxed as she finally sat up, arms going up and stretching hard, arms and spine popping with a lazy smile and a quiet "Pardon me". As she came back down, she sat maybe an inch taller, or so it seemed. Arms receding to the rests of her chair as the waitress pattered away on hard soled shoes. "You never really lose if you're still alive. Trying again is always an option, but you need a certain kind of conviction to keep at it. You analyze and think and rethink. You make the same mistake I make. I also retreat back into my head, and I overthink. Many a great king has wasted away on a throne thinking how best to reclaim land he has lost." Her eyes rocked up with her head to trace patterns on the ceiling. The white light reflected off deep blue, almost indigo eyes and she have a deeper sigh; her whole chest rose to support the conviction of her next statement. "At some point, you have to strike. You have to get rid of the ever-lingering notion of "I'm not ready". Maybe you are now, but if you're not ready to let go of that thought, you'll never try again." Keiko never thought to herself in terms of motivation. Her mind, left to its own devices, was all gears and wheels, all about practical knowledge. It kept her from realizing these statements in full, and by extension what stunted progresses she had made in years. When she looked to him again, her eyes were shimmering a bit before one, or two, or three fell down her face and onto her thighs. It was weird, when she could really think about how her legs felt nothing. Her mind wandered back to that little race outside. She didn't realize it then, but she couldn't feel that rain either. She didn't feel the cold. The softness of the towel, either. Just that one glance. --- Vulcan, in the meantime, was not having as pleasant a time. However, he was absolutely flabbergasted that he had even HIT this beast. He could feel the ringing of metal on metal in that gear. His mouth-shaped grill was agape wider than he had ever before. He'd read it. He'd launched it perfectly. And it hurt? Was he really effective in combat, or was it luck? His metal mind turned at incredibly high speeds as he tried to process it all, tried to grasp why. How? Of course, he'd forgotten his policy: only focus on what, not why or how. That golden armored devil seemed to grow and bend in the rain. Vulcan was still reeling in his own thoughts that he thought the rain was simply coming down harder, making his enemy seem taller. No, the enemy was coming closer and that thrown hand had been forgotten, not called back. He threw up his remaining hand, but. Where did he go? He moved his hand back and hit nothing. He'd feinted to his unarmed side. Skrrring! Skrrrrrrrp! Both hit, but the first set off a flash of light that could blind lightning. This was the first time he'd seen this, but that jagged pain in his back was all he needed. He turned on a tooth again and full-cog slapped at whatever was there. He would've followed up, but he took this opportunity to re-arm himself. Well then. That might come in handy. [attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]Keiko's words are full of certainty, a kind of proof that she knows where Yun rests and how it feels on the inside, compelled to just throw in the towel after that one catastrophic loss. He had to remind himself of the facts: both Zubamon and himself were alive, and had escaped both capture by the hands of the authorities, and a fate far worse than imprisonment. In this moment, the handicapped girl was right--there was room to try again. And, as long as they both continued to breathe and fight, there would always be. Yun lets loose a deep, relaxed sigh, possibly for the very first time tonight, as though a great deal of weight was lifted from his shoulders. And, just in the nick of time, the waitress of the little cakes-and-cookies shop gingerly shuffled her way to the table that both he and Miss Kojima occupied, quietly setting down their requested orders: a parfait and cream soda for the young lady, and a slice of cheesecake topped with fresh strawberries and a cup of piping hot espresso scented and flavored in raspberry. Looking up to speak, he sees Keiko's eyes glassed over, shimmering, and Yun's heart skips a beat or two. Had he said or done something inconsiderate? His hand loses its grip on the small gathering of cards between them, and one slips out and gently falls onto the floor, the booster Fresh Milk. Yun cannot summon the words he wants to say, the question he wants to ask. The question that has plagued him this entire night. What am I doing wrong?--- A deafening scrape of metal against metal is music to Zubamon's ears, but the phosphorescent flash that followed his rising blow filled the dragon's vision with vast white, stunning him right where his body achieved the apex of his earlier rising double-slash just long enough to feel a second, cog-shaped hand pulverize his armored torso with surprising force. Unable to see the incoming attack or defend against it, the cape-wearing Rookie's body is sent hurtling slightly upwards until his back collides with an electrical post, grunting sharply as he slides down the wooden pole and collapses to a knee once again, blinded and disoriented. The raucous cracks of thunder are deafening to Zubamon, and it is only a matter of time before the remainder of his senses fade into one another. But he is not one to surrender so readily. Zubamon remains eerily still for the time, allowing the rainfall to soothe his aching nerves, wash him clean of his haze, and return his mind to an earlier state of clarity. He wasn't losing to this poor excuse for a heating coil. He was simply testing the waters. 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink. [attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ The tension she could hear leak out of Yun's lungs was like a crowd of applause at an opera. She felt like she'd helped him, like someone actually listened to her and without saying it, thanked her. She had been so genuine about what she'd told him, but this intensely warm feeling as if she'd been bathed in spotlight made her second guess herself. Had she actually helped herself or him? Between that and her defeatist attitude she could hardly contain the tears, but when she heard those clicking steps, her eyes became desperate. They shut tightly, trying to wring the last of the salt from her lashes before wiping at them with the heel of her palms. When she could see again, she saw food, colorful and bright and the face of her company which was almost completely opposite. Her hand covered her mouth as she felt a lurch behind her eyes. No, what? He looked like he had just beat a puppy. She sniffled a little and smiled, trying to split that rock of sadness that had taken up residence in her chest. "Now you stop with that look, Mr. Yoshimasa. I'm just getting a little overwhelmed. I don't tend to follow my own advice." The cool in her voice was almost there, wavering in a steady pace before reaching the end as her throat closed to refuse the emotion exit. She had to take a few breaths and a spoonful of cool yogurt before she could speak again. "I just...You didn't do anything wrong. I'm just good at keeping my problems a bit more private, that's all. We all have demons." She breathed a little easier, but no she had lost a bit against him. To be quite honest, without her composure, without that outside pressure to keep her from ripping apart, she was exactly as she looked at a distance: a little girl in a wheelchair. She had worked hard to get past that, but she had skipped steps. She hadn't acknowledged this. She didn't want to, it hurt. She threw a fist onto the table, shaking the dining-ware. What was she thinking? That was so far from the truth it made her chuckle. She refrained from allowing it to bloom, stunting it with a deep inhale. She couldn't possibly be so foolish as to believe that, could she? She took a sip from her soda, craning to it near the edge away from the wall. There was a little cardstock rectangle down there. "You dropped your cards."--- What was this? What was this....excitement? He was really getting hyped, starting to float and bob. The alley served to focus down Vulcan's attention to laser in on this golden knight surrounded by filth and grime. Trash cans and bags of garbage, how filthy humans could be. But he got up. Vulcan wavered a bit, unsure how after such a solid hit he could still stand. This was beyond him, everything was so new and if he could smile, he would. He flexed the teeth of his hand cogs to limber up; the tensions in his metal were starting to strain after such short conflict. He was very out of shape Now he could see where Keiko was coming from. She wanted be stronger so she could come after him. He needed to be strong to defend her. This would be a good workout. "OVERCLOCK!" He threw the non-dominant hand, chasing it down so he could deliver a follow-up with the opposite hand. All he could see was that golden spot. His sparring partner for the time being. The happy clicking of his internals managed to out-sound the rain. [attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]The metaphorical frog in Yun's throat dislodges itself upon hearing Keiko's quiet yet firm commands to do away with the sadness lurking behind his big, purple eyes, assuring that her own tears were merely a result of neglecting to take her own proverbial medicine. Her voice falters, enough to where she must take a gulp of her parfait to regain some inkling of her original atmosphere of personal composure and detachment. Watching Miss Kojima attempt to maintain her facade of maturity, even as the still-functioning half of her body trembles under the growing pressures of her own burdens, made Yun feel as though he were staring directly into a mirror. They were two cuts from the same cloth, kindred spirits forced into a world seemingly designed to make them, and others like them, suffer endlessly. Whether physical or psychological, truly both Keiko and Yun had their demons to contend with. Still, her earlier words ring like church bells in the duelist's recent memory. At some point, there comes a time when one must discard the feelings of uncertainty and take a leap of faith, even as the jaws of certain defeat looms over their shoulders. Failure, in the grand scheme of things, was less of a preconceived result and more a state of mind, one that could truly cripple the spirit, worse than any-- No. That was going too far. When Keiko points out the lone card on Café Syrup's tile floor, Yun feels his body instinctively move to pick up and examine what had dropped, then widens his gaze somewhat upon seeing the illustration of a milk bottle being poured, yet another symbolic reminder to the duelist for him to pick himself up and stay in the moment. He takes a bite of cheesecake, making sure to add a chunk of strawberry for extra flavor. " I suppose now is as good of a time as any to start trying again," Yun muses aloud with a half-chuckle, tucking away the bite of food behind a cheek so that he could verbalize his words coherently. To fortify this message, he retrieves his Cooling Agent restorative card and puts it on the table as a visual cue. --- The dragon's hearing is muffled and hindered by a combination of the heavy beating of rain and the throbbing sensations deep inside his skull. His body feels sluggish and unresponsive, clearly nothing to be proud of. Master Yun would be ashamed if he were to see him in this condition. This whole situation was pathetic! The numbness in Zubamon's arms grows hotter and more intense, replacing itself with his sweltering inner rage. Tiny sparks from his razored claws visibly flicker against asphalt as he grinds them slowly closed into tightly-balled fists, only to punch one of them into the ground hard enough to create a sizable impact mark, signaled by another flash of lightning and the explosive crack of thunder that followed it. Then, the glittering gold warrior scrapes his claws on the hard, abrasive surface of the streets in a threatening flurry of metal, as though he were throwing a tantrum. But these were not the frustrated thrashes and flails of a Digimon ruled by emotion, but a means to sharpen his already-formidable talons, another strategy for him to exploit. A way to intimidate his foes. One last, powerful splay of his claws creates a vacuum effect around Zubamon's body that causes the rain that fell around him to splash outward, like he had commanded the elements themselves to make way for his next attack. Two blistering hot gears from the Solarmon come rushing forward, but the caped dragon curls his pointed nails as he brings his arms into a right angle, staying the full course of his daring rush. One cog-hand makes contact with the left claw which Zubamon quickly closes, and the second one comes practically sailing into the grasp of the dragon's other claw, clamping down around it with all his might. Both of his enemy's appendages cause Zubamon intense pain, but he lingers through it, endures the torment it causes him, even as it threatens to liquefy the very armor that was meant to diminish the efficacy of such attacks, even as his claws start to smoulder as wisps of white smoke billow from within. He does this knowing full well that taking this risk would yield the greatest results in the end. Zubamon endures the pain to maintain his full speed, then leaps forward, the Solarmon's exposed form lined up perfectly with the sharpened point of the dragon's shimmering nasal blade. 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink. [attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ The silence between them as they ate was nice. Calming. Though, there was plenty to observe, even in the most minuscule things. Aside from the portion sizes on their utensils, they ate very similarly. Each bite trying to attain every ingredient to achieve maximum depth of flavor. Keiko was kicking herself a bit (figuratively, of course) for not getting the raspberry espresso herself. Even though she wasn't much for coffee, that smell seemed to whisper sweet nothings to her: "I'm not bitter, please, you'll like it." She wasn't much for stimulants either. They wrecked havoc with her already desperate sleep schedule. As much as they had similarities, there were also very slight difference to be gleamed through their eating habits as well. Keiko sat up straight, with good table manners even in her rocky state, ready and attentive to everything. Yun talked into his food, hunched slightly, a deadly focus she could admire. If multitasking was not her natural state, she could very well be a perfect match for him. However, that single-mindedness could very well be one of his greatest strengths: he threw everything at a problem in his head it seemed, and he was smart enough to give no credence to foolish ideas. Fear and uncertainly certainly had their place in him, but didn't dictate him as much as that focus and stoicism. Keiko wished her lingering fears could be pushed aside so easily. She was 2/3rds the way down her parfait before dropping her spoon and wiping the edge of her red-stained lips. Her movements were fluid again, the shaking gone. Maybe she just needed the sugar, like some grumpy toddler. What he said earlier came back to her as she checked her phone, letting the screen blink to life and- B-TING B-TING B-TING B-TING B-ZZZT B-ZZ-She made the mad dash to jab the volume button from loud to vibrate to silent as the OS began to register her notification. Seventeen. Seventeen missed calls. All from Reina, of course. Her non-seeing hall neighbor and really the only person she talked to at the school. Which Reina adored, because Keiko had no eye problems whatsoever. It was almost 7, how long had she been asleep on that train?! She put up a hand and bowed to Yun slightly before hitting the call button. The answer was immediate. "I'm so, so sorry, Reina, I fell aslee--
No, Yukira didn't show up.
Yeah, I know, I should have figured she wouldn't.
I'm in Ōta.
Yes, that one.
I guess you could say I am, yes.
He's a true gentleman, we took refuge in this little café and are currently eating. I didn't have much to eat at the lunch.
No, don't be sorry, my phone was dead. I just didn't want you to worry any more. Your hair will go grey at that rate.
I don't know when I'll be back, just make sure no one sends a search party. I'll call you again when I'm on my way
Yes, he's tall.
Reina, I'm not going to do this right now, he's sitting right here."Click. Reina hung up in record time. "I'm sorry." This time it was her turn to be sheepish. It wasn't like she could just excuse herself, even to her there were certain pleasantries that became too much of a hassle without the use of legs. She tucked the phone back against the wall and sat back against the chair, hands coming together again and twiddling her thumbs. "That was my hallmate, Reina. She's um...quite curious about my outings, most days." A pause. "Is there anything you'd like to do, Yun? I don't think this storm can last much longer." Even though she had forgotten it was raging outside, this buzzing in her ear, like static, seemed to drown everything out beyond the walls. She too was learning to grasp that singular focus. --- Another flash of light and cutting pain. Vulcan lost it for a moment. Lost the battle, lost his place, and seemingly lost his conviction. He drifted in that moment, so confused and dazed. He'd been blinded by his own sunlight reflected off gold armor. He was sure that he had clinched it but he could not bring himself to move. He couldn't. He couldn't do anything. He tried and tried but he couldn't. It hurt too much. It burned. It BURNED!He body found vigor again, that dim heat fading and bursting to a searing flame. When he could see, half of his vision was obstructed by this large, keen blade lodged in the metal flesh above his left eye. His moving clockwork pinged against it and it burned with a pain unfamiliar, but satisfying. Tension came to life in his little cog hands as they found purchase between Zubamon's fingers, trying to muster force against it. It wasn't enough. Zubamon was running on this new fire, too. The rain served to stand in for raging heat waves as a line was drawn along the alley floor. He could push all he wanted, but Zubamon was still making progress. This fight was going into the street. But maybe that was a good thing. Maybe the fire could rage then. [attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]Silence falls between the two as they partake in their foodstuffs, Yun having become rather absorbed in the rich, delicate textures of his strawberry cheesecake, savoring the rich fruits and syrups drizzled over it as a shiny sweet garnish. His raspberry espresso provides an ever-so-subtle hint of tart berry flavor alongside the beverage's trademark bitterness. Between his meal and Miss Kojima's occasional glances of curiosity towards it, it made the cardsharp wonder about the taste of her parfait and cream soda. She had to have picked something equally delicious as the item he ordered, if not more so. It just wouldn't make any sense for someone to deliberately choose to consume poor quality food. The peals of thunder become a little softer as the time passes, a reflection of the pair's inner storms collectively dissipating into the fog of obscurity where it belonged. Loud, piercing tinkles and chimes rattle, instantly pulling Yun away from the attentions of his cake like a deer caught in headlights. That's right, he had come here to assist Keiko in recharging her cell phone. It seemed that the battery had either finished replenishing itself, or was almost there, as she had a call attempting to reach her. Frantically, the young lass takes to silencing the gizmo's annoying jingles and picks it up to answer back. She speaks in fragments to the person on the other side of the line, and although Yun does his best to tune her out, her occasional off-hand references to him do nothing but cement his focus on her words, even going as far to command this unknown figure not to 'send out a search party'. He wasn't sure if that last one was literal or figurative on Keiko's part, but her flustered attempts to keep the pale-skinned duelist out of the conversation results in an abrupt end to the call, followed by a terse apology for her acclaimed hallmate's curiosity. " I can't seem to think of anything in particular," Yun says after a short period of concentration. He carefully sorts through his cards and Keiko's so that he can return them back to the protective embrace of his deck box. " At least, nothing I hadn't planned for already." He shrugs halfheartedly, lips fashioned in a half-smirk as his eyebrows settled in a way that clearly illustrated his renewed sense of composure. " It shouldn't be long before the rain begins to subside." An important thought then crosses the duelist's mind. What was Zubamon up to? --- The gold-plated dragon can feel the glowing automaton of sunlight's strength fade momentarily, then return just as swiftly. His own crimson eyes, smouldering with the fires of inner conviction like hot coals, locked menacingly with his foe's, even as his nasal blade lodged itself above the Solarmon's left side, far enough to where Zubamon could feel the springs and wheels behind his newly-pierced metal plating tap and click uselessly against it, incapable of completing their programmed functions or routines. Brain damage. His fingers continued to sear with radiating agony, but tighter they still clenched, unwilling to let his opponent escape. Zubamon's feet were cold and numb, yet still carried him forward and pushed the clockwork Digimon backwards and directly into the streets of Ōta, creating a dull scrape across the sidewalk as the veil of rain simply evaporates into a cloud of thick, white steam before it can even drench the struggling combatants. Zubamon's grunts echo in a metallic tone, and he holds his breath. It was time to finish this, now or never. The golden dragon squeezes his claws as hard as he can, aiming not to crush the Solarmon's hands like cans made of aluminum, but to get the mechanical Digimon to relent, to add just the right amount of pressure needed to completely remove all resistance he was putting up. Then, he would drag his face downward to carve into, or even possibly remove, the creature's eye. This would be a mark of recompense, a gruesome ceremonial reminder of his near-victory this day, a macabre symbol of his bravery and dedication to his duty as both a warrior and a protector. While Zubamon might have viewed such a wound as a badge of honor and pride, the mileage of others certainly varied in this situation. 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink. With the blade having so much intimate contact with Vulcan's mind, he could feel it. It was that same feeling that made him want to disobey's Keiko to leave. He was surprised he could still remember her through the heat. They rushed him in an onslaught of his brain. He was being pushed effortlessly across the ground, no longer able to focus on floating as the pain in his gears only served to emphasize his memory. Her smile. The kindness of this one broken stranger as he erupted into this world confused, without function. Only wishing to become more complex, but that was no function. He would help her out of bed, in bathing, in her safety and security. He was there in these storms, in the rain his heat would not let him feel. He was her audience, her council, her su-no. She was his sun. Intensely strong, but filled with fear. Dispensing energy without regard for stability. Only to help light the way, and prepare others. There she was. On the plush ground of her dorm room, legs covered and sitting like a siren on the bluff. Hair cascading down, eyes wide in amazement and smile beaming in excitement. "What are you?"No, wait, she was leaving. Fading, being split. What had filled his eyes was being defiled by this filthy blade, gaudy and gold and pale comparison to his light. He was losing his eye. He was losing that vision, that memory. What was she saying? What had she said?! Why couldn't he remember! The growl that accompanied him discarding his hands in two successive Overclocks would be all but a whisper between these two, muffled by the last staccato of thunder. Whatever this cog had coughed at this knight in spite was nothing compared to this. Vulcan, in a moment, came to terms he would have this gash in his head and this hairline slice in the glass that covered his spiny eyeholes. Because that didn't matter as long as he could see. What he would tell Zubamon would be the half the reason he would not take this lick and would not take a true loss. He was more noble. His 'why' was stronger. His commander was stronger. "Keiko!"The battle cry was steeped in longing and want. The oath of a true knight. With no hands, he did all he could. He found that damned yellow spot and charged. Face first. There was another, one final flash of light and then he clattered to the ground like a penny. "You're...you're pretty good." He didn't even see what happened. He couldn't get up. He didn't know if his hands had been let go, he couldn't feel them. But that didn't matter. His 'why' was stronger. [attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]The screech of metal fills Zubamon's ears, but pales to the screams of agony that he had fully anticipated, but never arrived, even as a shower of sparks fly from his nasal blade's point of entry like fireworks. There is no cracked lens, no seeping orifices for him to determine the full extent of his strike, nothing but a long, hard glimpse of the rain-drenched streets and the torturous heat of the Solarmon's nearly busted cog-hands. His stab was far too shallow, he had not struck hard enough. The scars from this fight would be permanent, but hardly detrimental on his opponent's end. Before he can bring his own head up, torturous heat consumes every fiber of his being, his own two hands having become the very channels with which the Solarmon exploited with aplomb, and Zubamon's arms and wrists quickly begin to buckle, against his will. Even he can no longer retain his ironclad silence any longer, and bellows at the automaton with a jagged mixture of horrendous anger, and a single-minded drive to fulfill his own oath, his duty to the human that fate had ordained to be his master. Serving Yun was all that mattered. There was no past Zubamon could recall, no memories or remnants of a life before him. All that he knew, all that ever made sense to the weaponized Rookie, was that he was meant to act as his sword, to enact his will upon the world however he saw fit. The image of his Tamer's back, silhouetted against the light of dawn, burned within the armored Digimon's mind more powerfully than any pain or suffering that this floating excuse for a pocket watch could ever dish out. Hollow as might have been for some, to be of use to Yun was his lot in life, his purpose, his very reason for existing. Against all reason, against this seemingly unending gauntlet that could give the flames of Purgatory itself a run for their money, Zubamon's body enters a state of auto-pilot, empowered solely on adrenaline and, more simply, his bullheaded determination to show his adversary, to prove to him, that even a broken sword could still be useful. He throws the Solarmon's hands away in one last gambit, and his head rises to meet his foe's. As the storm's final bolt of lightning touches down with a grand and powerful bang, all the sensation in Zubamon's body leaves at once, and he goes limp, crashing to the pavement in a rattle of metal pounding asphalt. Even his cape seems to drain of all vitality and essence, now resembling little more than a glorified tablecloth soaked in rain water. There is no feeling left inside him. Not the heat of anger or the throb of pain, just... Emptiness. A peace he swore could last forever, if he wanted it to. Was this what enlightenment felt like? Or, was he dead? He honestly couldn't tell, since the world was spinning so fast it almost felt like he just needed to throw up. Instead, Zubamon merely lays there, uncaring about the nausea settling in the pit of his stomach, gazing listlessly as the rain slowly, but surely, begins to subside into a gentle mist, as though to cool off the sweltering heat of their battle. He lets the Solarmon have his moment, silently thankful that no one was killed tonight; senseless bloodshed wasn't Zubamon's modus operandi, anyway. Whether Gearhead over there could see it or not, the gold dragon was smiling. Fuck, did it hurt, though. 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink. [attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ She smiled to him, knowing that once that last spoonful of parfait was gone, they'd part ways. It was a very real possibility that they wouldn't again in essentially the city state that was Tokyo. In a sea of faces, beyond school and Headquarters, there was no second meeting. Everyone blended into this sprawling silhouette. Though, she was sure that like her, there were other points of color in the crowd. Next to them, partners in some grand struggle that was too early to identify. She gave a yawn, neatly covered in her hand, and sat back. She'd just let it sit there for a few more moments; it wasn't like it was going to curdle. She just had to have this. Both parties satisfied in each other's company, not wanting anything else. Just enjoying this equilibrium. They'd face their demons another day, she thought, as she stacked her cards and slid them in their velvet case, leaning over to pick up her bag. She was getting ready, but that was life half functioning. Twice the planning and prep to do the same thing anyone else did. Surely he understood. She dropped it, however. Fear would not so easily be ignored as the little peace they had made her unprepared for one last crash of thunder that sounded as if the bolt had landed right outside the awning. She squeaked, but quickly scrambled up her bag to lay on her lap. She tucked away her cards and her charger, withdrawing her wallet and calling over that same mousy waitress. She would have none of Yun's protesting, she simply gave the woman a bill, one that exceeded the receipt by a decent amount, and told her to keep the change. She was feeling generous. Then, she scooped that last bit of yogurt and fruit. Yet, she was unable to raise it from its deep cup as this piercing scream, muffled by glass, woke up the storm-weary store goers. The scream scared her less than the thunder, but worry crossed her brow with its implication. Her hand dove for that brass-accented device and clicked a few buttons. It pinged softly against the innards of the bag as the radar function colored a blip for her. It was moving. She looked out towards the door then back to the screen. He was going to the subway. She took a moment to think. Her hand slowly retreated to her phone as if that's what she had grabbed for. The stir outside was hopefully enough of a distraction. "Maybe it was some stray dog." For a girl who could keep a poker face excellently, who could lie through omission or simply not disclose information, outright lying was not a strong suit. She sounded barely interested, eyes on her phone and swiping through random nothingness. She checked the time, then stowed the phone in her bag. "Despite all that outside," she began, rolling out from behind the table, "the next train is coming in and I have to be off; I'd hate to keep you for too long. You've got important things after all." That last part was genuine, she wanted to imagine that what she had said would really stick. She bowed as much as she could to him, one of the only people that she felt deserved it, even in this polite society. "Look me up if you're ever in Shibuya. For anything." With that, she took her leave with mind and arms possessing a new strength. The hostess held the door open for her as she threw a wink over her shoulder to him. "I'll be fine. You will too."On the way home, as she agonized over Vulcan's new 'badge of honor' as he called it, she remembered something. She never had had that last bite, did she? "Are you sure you'll be okay, Vulcan? I'm sorry, I didn't think a bioemergence would've made it this far!" Her whispers bounced around the new cavern in the Solarmon's face. "I'm always okay, Ms. Keiko. And I'm quite sure. It'll help remind me that we both want to get stronger." Vulcan's grill had remained shut throughout his whole, somewhat fabricated story. But he let his voice come through unabated now. "I didn't beat him. But you made sure I didn't lose."EXIT THREAD Deck: Pebble Storm Feather Gust Protect Driver Blink Drill Shell A Harpoon Torpedo Replenish Board Reset Meta Cocoon Overdrive Shinai W Poison Apple Nova Flame Thor's Hammer | [attr="class","white"] [attr="class","night"] [attr="class","burstmini"]@ [attr="class","burstmini"]000 words [attr="class","burstmini"]notes: |

[attr="class","trying"] [attr="class","we1"] [attr="class","lost1"]let us play a game [attr="class","rise"] [attr="class","dying1"] [attr="class","mouths1"]The cheesecake dwindles with every forkful, his cup of espresso trailing behind by a few more sips. Yun is careful to avoid reaching for another taste of the raspberry-scented beverage, still producing faint wisps of aromatic steam, as a raucous crash of Heaven's fury causes the windows to shiver. As the man with the world's most dangerous hairstyle lifts the porcelain cup to his lips, he breathes deeply through his nostrils and sips, lowering the vessel to smile back at Keiko in turn. She feels certain that Tokyo's size alone served to diminish their odds of a second encounter with one another, a thought Yun almost felt inclined to agree with, were he capable of reading minds. But he was not the most firm believer in determinism; this one event, fleeting as it was in the grand cosmic scheme of all things, could be likened to a seed, planted by their meeting of chance and nourished through a willingness to establish a common link. If Keiko Kojima felt that the pressures of her own life were enough to smother the fickle will of fortune, then Yun Yoshimasa--by his very nature as a man with a gambler's spirit--was willing to bet all of his proverbial chips in fortune's favor that they would, one day, meet again under a more voluntary set of circumstances. Just as the soft-spoken girl had done, Yun carefully moves to gather his cards and opens the hinged lid of his box, sliding the decorated pieces of stock neatly inside, and closing the shiny container with a faint yet audible click. The acoustics in this shop were surprisingly powerful, the duelist's surface thoughts briefly digress. As he reflected over this stray postulation, what sounded like a high-pitched scream pulls Yun away from his cheesecake to gaze out the window, and finds his eyes falling upon Miss Kojima instead, apparently reaching into her bag for something. A distinctive ping, one he immediately recognizes as the chime of a D-Power, is what he hears before Keiko practically robs Yun of the chance to confirm his findings by retrieving her smartphone instead, chalking up the sudden noise as the howl of a stray animal, her gaze glued, rather unconvincingly, at her screen. The girl in the wheelchair retrieves her belongings and reminds Yun of the facts at hand, it was time for them to part ways and return to the three-ring circus act of their daily lives. He cannot bring himself to ask about that familiar chiming, to simply what he wants to say-- Then again, he also didn't want to? Call it a stroke of intuition if you will, but the duelist in leather feels himself genuinely resisting his natural urge to bring attention to questions that needed no answer. Deep down, he knew what was going on, and, perhaps, so did she. Tonight, they could briefly set aside their destinies as Tamers part of an ongoing struggle with forces beyond their reckoning and be who they wished to be: just ordinary human beings caught up in yet another moment in a never-ending series of them. But, the pleasantries must eventually come to an end, and the two must take up their respective mantles once more. Keiko Kojima backs her chair up from the table and carefully pushes her way to the door, kept held open by the waitress that had served them, and instructs him to look her up if he ever passed through Shibuya. " I'll be fine. You will too." Her words touch the duelist's heart like a warm summer breeze baked by the loving radiance of the sun, a force of invigoration that truly befitted the Digimon that served as her companion and friend. Yun smiles. " Thank you, Miss Kojima. Thank you." --- It took several more minutes for the storm's full density to subside, enabling the roving cardsharp to leave Café Syrup, stretching his arms, legs, and back out in response to how cramped the interior was. The smell of rain was staunch like his espresso, even acting like a hit of extra energy, despite the light trashy odor. He needed it, apparently, because Yun would spend practically all of it in a frantic state of worry upon discovering Zubamon laying face-up on the pavement as though his body had been pulverized with a molten sledgehammer, golden armor now full of sizable scratches and dents. And, were those burns? The dragon's only explanation to his equally pointy human came in the form of a blunt lie: a Digimon had suddenly bio-emerged while he was on surveillance duty, and upon moving to dispatch it, he was given a sound thrashing the moment it Digivolved into a more powerful form. Of course, Zubamon concludes his fable by insisting his victory was assured the moment he closed in for the attack. It was enough to subdue Yun's anxieties, but it did pose an important question: what would have happened had such a Digimon manifested like that? If anything, it gave the soaking wet dragon something to chew over while he quietly reflects on the true chain of events that had transpired, his spontaneous match-up with Keiko's Solarmon, reminded of the little 'souvenir' he gave him before he fell unconscious from the sweltering pain in his hands and fingers. It was a personal victory, just for Zubamon to enjoy. —THREAD COMPLETE— 1: FRESH MILK - Summons forth a bottle of fresh milk for one target Digimon to drink.
