Ohjeez. He thought he was able to stop himself in time, but the other two understood what he meant to say. He got a mild scolding from Shiro, but what worried him the most was the girl's response - namely that it wasn't instantaneous. There was no way she didn't hear that; she was right next to him.
But before he could break out into a nervous sweat, she finally spoke...and she didn't sound that angry. It was actually kind of...warm. Like she wasn't angry or annoyed at all. "Y-yeah," he stuttered for a moment, "You got that right." He pointed to his eyes, as if to say "I don't let this stop me either."
But before he could breathe a sigh of relief, a comment from his opponent nearly made him gasp: he noticed that the "stuffed toy's" expression had changed. The girl's comments that it could bite him only worried Hideo even more. Was he actually that close to Kuki? Had he been that close the whole time? No wonder she changed her expression - she must have gotten nervous!
"I, uh...didn't know it could do that. You sure her face moved? Don't know why he'd give me something that changes expressions." He had to think quick, do something to distract him from his partner (who was struggling to maintain her composure).
"Check!" he exclaimed, moving his queen so it threatened Shiro's king. At the moment, he thought his opponent's only response would be to put a knight in the way, allowing him to take a valuable piece. Then he could move on and threaten his other knight and then-
Wait.
He just placed his queen next to one of Shiro's pawn. Diagonally from said pawn.
He placed his palm over his face. How could he have made such a dumb mistake?
Then again, it'd probably get Shirou's attention away from Kuki. He let out a sigh, his hand sliding down. "It's...it's your turn, Shirou."
He took another chunk of his cookie, hoping the sweet taste of sugar and chocolate would distract him from this embarrassment.
Maybe he'd get lucky and his opponent would make a similar mistake. Kojima Keiko , Toshiro Emiya » made by wizzCurrent Game Status1-2

Toushirou stared at Keiko blankly. Honestly, he had never been too interested in literature. It was something force-fed to teach him the English language and give him an appreciation for the written word, but it had just made him grow a distaste for reading in general.
Point being, he hadn't cared to analyse the story once he was done reading it, probably chucking it over his shoulder carelessly and hoping it would smack his tutor across the face.
These two clearly didn't share his distaste for reading in general. They almost seemed enthusiastic to discuss them, while he just sat there making fun of the author's tendencies. He felt childish and a bit embarrassed.
"That so? Guess there was some silver lining to that gory climax after all." He commented in a more mellow tone, scratching at the back of his head.
A short moment of silence ensued as Toshiro stared blandly at the very terribly positioned Queen. It had literally come out of nowhere. It was a possibility, but one he had completely discarded, since seeing how well Hideo had been doing.
"Mistakes were made." he said as he toppled the Queen with the pawn, his gaze remaining fixedly onto the doll's face.
"Check." With the pawn now in the space occupied by the Queen before, there was nothing standing between one of his rooks and the boy's king.
His eyes narrowed at the plush, scrutinizing it.
Yes, it was dumb to think that everything and everyone he met was somehow related to digimon, and Hideo frankly looked to young to be getting into that mess, but it just seemed very unlikely that the plush had any mechanic parts inside of it.
Not to mention that Hideo had not been exactly subtle there. He had clearly panicked for a moment; he couldn't see him doing such a mistake after how well he had been doing so far.
Still...
He slowly turned away from the 'doll', shrugging his shoulders and letting it go. He shrugged his shoulders and smiled lazily at Keiko and Hideo.
"Guess I better not risk it, then. Wouldn't want this handsome mug chomped right off my skull."
It wasn't like he was being particularly upfront about his tamer status with anyone, so he probably shouldn't push for either.

[attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ To see Hideo so readily accept the hand he was dealt cemented to her that this boy had far longer experience in the field of being stifled. His mind was so fresh and eager, but unable to see the fruits of his labor. Forever to only be privy to second hand description that would always pale in comparison to the original. He was held solely in the palm of the attentiveness of others and it brought back the guilt.Maybe some other day, she would apologize. For now though, chess was being played. "At least I like to think that way," was her only response to the blonde haired man. Simple, stoic, and reserved was the voice that retreated back into her core, as she also retreated somewhat by sloping forward, arms against her stomach. She simply watched now, not heeding the digimon or the players. Just the pieces moving about and the hands of the lords guiding them. A piece here. Another piece. Now an answer, revenge for a sloppy mistake. A war of attrition, vying for position on the board. Then, the fatal mistake. Hideo's mind had simply slipped for an instant, but there was no taking back the move now. And he'd pay for it. An exchange of 'Check' and now things had completely changed atmosphere. Keiko began to absentmindedly mutter. "Chess is only challenging because you're aware of your enemy's tactical abilities; it's entirely possible to learn every move and countermove, even to memorize them. I don't know why people call this a true 'depiction of the battlefield'." Keiko was doing something she didn't often do, not when she was focused. She was speaking her mind. The sound of his queen being taken by one of Toshiro's pawns was expected, but it still stung. Still, it didn't mean that the game was over just yet - he still had some good pieces left.
Unfortunately, he just wasn't able to recover the momentum. Every move either put him in a worse position or made him lose a piece. Check after check, loss after loss, every attempt to break free failing. One time, he even had to feel around the chess board just to remember where all the pieces were.
At least it sounded like the girl's warning worked, as his opponent said he wouldn't get any closer to Kuki, so he was somewhat relieved.
Though it didn't stop the inevitable.
Checkmate.
A small sigh escaped. It was unfortunate that he lost his first game so badly against someone he just played with for the first time, especially in front of a small audience, but he couldn't feel mad. His uncomfortable, panicked frown warmed up to a slight grin. Despite all the stress, he actually enjoyed it.
He gave a small, honest applause. "You said you were rusty, but it looks like you're a lot better than I am! The victory is yours, Mr. Toshiro!"
Seemed like the girl also had something to say about their game. He turned his head over to face her. "I guess you're right. But if it really is just a lot of memorization, then I guess I'm really inexperienced with chess. To people people like me that haven't learned every move, it can really feel like a chaotic battlefield! Guess I just have to get better~" He laughed a bit, rubbing the back of his head.
"You weren't that bad - I'm sure you can win if you try again," Kuki mused.
Aloud.
Hideo froze up, even his face frozen. Did...did Kuki just break her cover to comfort him? He wasn't sure how to react - they just went through all that trouble to try and convince Shiro she wasn't a living creature. But how could he hide such a specific response as just another part of a stuffed animal?
He started to sweat.
Kuki was having a similar response, her own face frozen at the realization of what she just did.
She, too, began to sweat. Kojima Keiko Toshiro Emiya » made by wizzCurrent Game Status

The game didn't last long after Hideo's first stumble. If he had to guess, the boy had rushed to try and take Toshiro's own queen to even the odds. Unfortunately, his efforts had been hasty and he seemed to still be slightly off his game for whatever reason, so it wasn't particularly difficult to essentially run the show through constant checks.
As the game continued, it seemed their spectator's lips got a little loose, the girl's opinion slipping past while she was momentarily out of it.
"Huh. Some people believe that?" Asked the blonde, offering a tilt of his brow as the only sign of his disbelief. "Wow. Ain't that the silliest notion?"
Chess was a nice little metaphor for war, sure. But there was very little in common between the chessboard and a battlefield. He doubted there would be access to perfect Intel on the enemy, for one.
Checkmate came and went, and now Toshiro was slowly returning every piece back to its place, humming along as Hideo spoke. "Nah. It was fluke. You made an unexpected mistake, there." He said bluntly, the board now back to how it started.
He could only tilt a thin brow at Hideo and Keiko. 'Memorizing' every move was a waste of time. Knowing every move, opening, gambit and maneuver in the game didn't magically grant the judgment required to play at a high level.
"If you want to get better, you just need to play more." He said bluntly, lazily leaning his head against his fist. "You'll probably want more opponents than just me and whoever you usually play with, though."
And then the spider suddenly talked.
And Toshiro continued as normal.
"Eh, maybe. He did seem to make quite the goof before for no reason. Maybe if he hadn't- ..." He paused. Then slowly turned his head towards the plush.
"Huh." He uttered eloquently.
'Oh hey, you WERE right before after all.'
"Surprisingly, this is barely the third weirdest thing that has happened recently."

Yet, she wasn't wrong. If a computer could play chess and even win against some of the greatest chess players on the planet, what was there but just a database of moves and the most mathmetically correct choice? She wanted to say something, but there wasn't anything to add to Toshiro's examination. He wasn't wrong at all; you could easily learn these things by just playing over and over. You learn different styles and how to exploit them. She sat up and watched the board reset. She had felt like a game earlier, but the weather wasn't doing anything for her now. She still managed a smile, but it was more distant now. "Are we finally done feigning ignorance, Ms. Keiko?" She started to laugh. Finally, this secret had been revealed for all and now Vulcan had decided to tip his hand from within the backpack. He was not so inconspicuous that he could occupy open air with the common folk. She looked to both of them, genuinely smiling this time. "It appears I also may have omitted some things."It was amazing how much better she felt. She could ignore the awkwardness, the only instance of her being able to run from her problems. It just fell away and she could relax. He gradually regained his focus on the situation, thinking up a few excuses that he could give the two about why that "stuffed spider" was speaking. Just a pre-recorded line, despite how specific it was. Maybe Kuki would get the hint and read off some other line that was more random.
Though to be honest, he expected a much more dramatic reaction from the other two people there. Toshiro just talked as if nothing was out of the ordinary before musing that this wasn't even the strangest thing he saw recently, while the girl was silent. Not even a gasp from her.
He heard another voice speak up. He recognized it as the third person he thought he heard before (whom he completely forgot about up until now). He came from where the girl was like before, but Hideo could tell the voice was muffled, like it was hidden inside something.
It sounded like Kuki heard the same thing, as with her cover blown, she didn't hesitate to get up off her spot and rush over to her partner, her legs rhythmically, though frantically, tapping against the ceramic table with her progress. "Hideo, did you hear that? I think that she has a digimon with her!"
She sounded legitimately distressed, like it was a threat that was going to strike at any moment, and she stood on his shoulder as if she were an owl watching over a threat. While Hideo was surprised at the thought that Kuki wasn't the only digimon here, he wasn't nearly as scared as her. "I don't think you have to worry about it," he said, grabbing his partner by the pedicel and moving her down onto his lap - which did nothing to break the small spider's gaze. "If she was going to cause any trouble, she'd have done so already."
He looked back up at the girl. She'd done nothing but commentate on their game and have friendly little discussions about literature and chess. No way was she going to. "I'm sorry if she's acting rude. She's just being really careful. She takes her job of protecting me very seriously."
He looked back across the table. Kuki would've reacted if she saw a digimon with him, and he sounded less than shocked when she spoke up by accident. It was too relaxed for someone that was completely unfamiliar with what she was. He'd been told it was best if the existence of digimon was kept a secret from people who didn't have any to prevent mass panic, but he seemed very calm about it. "Hey...I'm sorry if this is all confusing to you, but you said this was the third strangest thing you've seen recently. Does that mean you know what digimon are? Do you have one too?" And like that, everyone on here apparently had digimon. Wasn't that just the most amazing of amazing of coincidences?
Now, how to answer the boy?
On one hand, Hideo seemed like a nice enough kid and Keiko had given him snacks. On the other, anime logic dictated that shit would be hitting the fan one of these days. He didn't know how, but something would happen, and somehow, tamers would be the only ones able to solve it.
You couldn't have digimon without world ending events, after all. And frankly, he didn't feel like letting the power of friendship force him into such an event.
"Yep." He answered rather promptly, "I've seen digimon before. Only like two nights ago, in fact."
It was at this time that the blonde finally decided to try his own snacks, popping the milk carton open casually.
"I've taken the pretty bad habit of taking walks recently. Today I got sick of work early, but usually it's past midnight when I take my breaks." True enough, he supposed.
"Well, while walking through this very same park, I ran into a bunch of cosplayers. Or so I thought, anyways." He shrugged his shoulders.
"Turns out, they weren't cosplayers. And digimons aren't just a nostalgia driven anime from 10 years ago." He hummed in thought.
"I couldn't recognize the digimon with the so called tamers there. Can't recognize your partner there either, Hideo." He could recall just about every detail of the series, whether he wanted to or not. But it seemed like not every digimon out there had been featured in the show.

[attr="class","burst"] [attr="class","whitenight"] ❝ Keiko put her hands up in mock surrender to the tiny pink bundle, smiling with shut eyes. Somewhere in her there was a sense of nerves plucked again. This was a species she had no record for or had seen on any card. A theory came to her that it could be a new release scheduled but managed to escape into the Human World. She wouldn't be surprised if this was a new flagship digimon at all, but that just made her hands a little clammy. She had no idea of its nature or it's sensitivity. This however also went against other theories of how digimon developed personalities, or if all of the same species were different in name only. "You have every right to be suspicious," she nodded to the bug, letting her eyes be seen again, stone cold and unreadable. The smile was still there though as she continued. "My partner also has his reservation. Thank you for your vote of confidence, Hideo." Her hands came back to her wheelchair, then the curtain of her hair opened up to Toshiro. Vulcan had done what she'd failed to do and introduced herself. Which was rude not to do at the beginning, but in hindsight, she would've preferred it that way. Busters and Nightmare didn't often take to keeping their status secret so she could assume, however not with certainty, that these were free agents. She didn't like free agents. Too unpredictable when it came to this delicate balance the triad had created. A violent balance, but balance nonetheless. However, where she expected to see suspicion aimed at her, Toshiro remained just as placid as he had previously. She then went to questioning how this man lived, being so...non-consequential. She'd yet to meet many lone tamers, but out of all of them, Toshiro seemed the least interested in her proceedings. Then again, they didn't know who she was. What her knowing their names meant. He talked about his walks, his previous run ins. Keiko didn't attempt to press him for details; his words were probably the extent he'd offer to her and she wouldn't want to do something to draw more attention. However, a golden cog came forth from the bag over her shoulder. One of Vulcan's hands, resting atop which was her phone. "Call for you, Ms. Keiko." "Please excuse me," she directed at Hideo and his partner. The nod she gave Toshiro was curt; surely he understood, as a businessman, how important phone calls were when texting was much more common "Hello." It wasn't a question, even though she hadn't seen the caller I.D. She'd noticed him earlier in her studies. Middle height, sleeveless shirt. She could only see his left side now, about 30 meters away, but on his right bicep was a gas-mask tattoo. Really now...she had just come to study. Though, knowing her position and her disability, she wouldn't be surprised to have a shadow everywhere she went. "Is there a problem""No, Reina," Sorry, Reina. It was the first name I could think of. "Everything's fine, I just finished up that homework.""I got their faces. I assume a file will be started?""You worry to much, I'll finish up my end of the project when I get home." "We should probably report this now.""Well, if you're going to be like that, I'll just come home. I'll see you soon.""I'll bring a car around."She managed to keep her tone consistent. She was speaking in a pseudo-code, but that didn't change her attitude in her words: a sort of exasperation with the worries of her subordinates. She let out a small sigh and put the phone back on the gear and it disappeared. "It seems my time here's up. School life just never gets easier." She bowed from her chair, then the chair started to move on its own as Vulcan began to maneuver her to face the edge of the park. She gave one last goodbye to her entertainment. She wouldn't soon forget that feeling of being trapped. Chained in a dark room was really the only way to visualize it, but then came this bright, blinding light. A computer monitor. Trapped. Not necessarily useless. -"A good day to you, Toshiro. You as well, Hideo. I hope to see you again, someday."Deep down, she didn't. Either of those two getting involved in her forecasting would only cause hesitation for her. Familiarity made it hard to disregard consequence. And just like that, in only a minute or so, she was across the way. Then, just gone. Thank goodness Toshiro was already familiar with digimon. His siblings had been very clear about that "keep non-tamers unaware" part, so he was glad he didn't accidentally spoil it. But he had to wonder, was this guy actually a tamer? He didn't give an answer to whether or not he had one of his own...
"I was told she's one of a kind!" he responded with pride in his voice. He wasn't really in the whole digimon scene for long - less than a week. Apart from his family, these were the first tamers he ever met, so he had no idea what digimon were or weren't common.
He could feel Kuki tense up for a moment, as if she were about to pounce. He heard that third voice again, this time much clearer and much closer than before. It was easy to infer that the girl's digimon came out. Its voice sounded just as deep and metallic as before, but that was all he really knew about it.
From what he overheard from the phone call, the girl had a group project to work on for school. Must've been a tough project - she sounded kind of tired just talking about it. But it did sound like she had more work to do, so he wasn't too surprise when she had to excuse herself. He waved to her with his free hand, telling her, "I hope to meet you two again too! Maybe we can play chess sometime?"
After a few seconds of waving, he assumed she left. He turned back towards the table, towards Toshiro. Just how long had they been there for? Couldn't have been too long - there were still plenty of people walking and talking in the park, and he wasn't feeling hungry enough for lunch. They probably had enough time for another game. "Hey, Toshiro. Wanna play another-"
"I see you found someone to play with," a voice interrupted from behind him.
Hideo recognized the voice immediately, but was still surprised by how he didn't notice him approach from behind. "Kara! You're already done?"
"Yeah, I am done with it for now." Kara looked over at Toshiro, a cold glare piercing through his red eyes with a smile on his face. He was just a few years older than Hideo, but it would still be clear that these two were related by appearance alone. "Thank you for taking care of my little brother...Toshiro, was it? I take it he was not a bother for you?"
Hideo nodded. "He played chess with-"
"Do not be rude, Hideo," he snapped, shutting the child up in an instant. "I asked him, not you." He looked back up, his smile returned. "Now then, it is time for us to go back home." He tugged on Hideo's shoulder, and the child instantly got the point, pushing his seat back so he could stand up. "Once again, thank you for keeping an eye on him."
And with that, he lead Hideo away from the table, rather forcefully pushing him on the back to get him moving. The boy reasoned that his brother must've not wanted their parents to get worried about them being out for so long. Hideo took one last chance to look back, waving and saying, "I'll see you again sometime, Mr Toshiro!" before Kara turned him back around.
Neither sibling would say anything until they were a good distance away from Toshiro, whereupon Kara broke the silence. "Hideo. Those two were tamers, were they not?"
He was surprised that he mentioned two people - no doubt referring to Toshiro and Keiko. The former had already left by the time Kara picked him up: was he watching beforehand? "Well, I know that girl who was watching us - Keiko - was a tamer, but I don't know if Toshiro actually has a digimon. He said he's seen digimon before - real ones - but he didn't tell me if he actually had one of his own."
"I see. Did either of them ask you any unusual questions?"
That seemed like kind of an odd thing to ask, but Hideo thought on it. "Well...they asked where I got my digimon from because they never saw one like her before. I told them she was made just for me and-"
Kara stopped, grabbing him by the back of the collar. "You should not tell them things like that. They may just be trying to get information about you. Information that could be used against you, to hurt you."
"O-oh. Right. I'll try to be more careful next time." It was all he could muster to say. He knew Kara was only saying that because he was concerned about him, but Toshiro and Keiko seemed too nice to want to hurt him...

The lazy blonde offered not much more than a bland, half lidded expression to the wheelchair bound girl, finding little reason to distrust her.
It wasn't like he was being exactly forthcoming after all.
Not to mention that he had yet to learn of the three factions.
He liked to think that he had done a good job ignoring the girl's occasionally strange mannerism throughout the chat. It wouldn't have been polite to point out what may have been simple social awkwardness, anyways.
Small talk ensued while the lady was distracted by a phone call.
"One of a kind, huh? " He echoed, leaning his cheek onto his palm. How did that work?
"That brother of yours is beyond impressive." Assuming that the story hadn't been complete bogus, of course, seeing how it wasn't even a plush and all.
Either way, it appeared that their spectator was leaving. He idly wondered if he would meet her or Hideo ever again. He didn't think he would be taking many other walks in the future, it certainly wasn't in his nature.
But then again, that damn beetle just wouldn't leave his home...
Regardless. From what little he had gathered from some unintended eavesdropping, she was leaving to continue doing more schoolwork. Honestly, he could sort of understand the less than pleased tone on her words.
"See you, Miss Keiko. Thanks for the snacks." He said, waving his hand lethargically as the girl left the scene promptly, his gaze following her on her way out until she was out of sigh.
"Well. Just us again." He commented, turning his gaze back towards the board just as Hideo began requesting another game.
Not that the kid got to finish, mind you.
A supremely unfriendly looking fellow who had a just barely passing resemblance to Hideo interrupted the boy before he could finish, and from his words and the kid's reaction, Toshiro could more or less guess who the person was.
Toshiro's lazy hazel eyes met the kid's brother red orbs, and... well, as far as Toshiro was concerned, absolutely nothing happened, really.
The brother was polite, yet, Toshiro couldn't say he felt particularly respected despite the boy's formal speech and perfect diction. He simply nodded at the boy's words.
"It was no issue." No sooner had his words been said, the brother was already taking Hideo away, quite literally pushing him in the direction he wanted. Even then, Hideo managed to deliver a surprisingly cheery farewell.
The blonde young man rose his hand silently, though he quickly realized how ineffective a good bye that would be.
"Yeah, kid. That would be nice." Well... the bug would likely stay in his room for a good while, so it wasn't like he wouldn't be forced to go out on a regular basis anyways.
He had been procrastinating getting into shape for like a year now anyways.
"See ya on the flip side."
