Kimura KyōryokuObito had finished his day of school and was now walking down the street along the shopping district of town. He was adjusting better to Tokyo and was getting used to the flowing crowd. It was like a pace that one had to follow to move around, despite the exhaustion on his legs. Curious to the more fun venues to Shinjuku, Obito decided to take time to look around. Even though he walked along casually-- he was far from alone as Panthermon shadowed him from the safety of his perch. The panther was now upon the tops of the nearby building. With his acute senses and his extrasensory abilities, he could keep an eye on Obito even from afar. It was then that Obito found an interesting place. A large-scale arcade among the Shinjuku crossing that looked like a grand restaurant/gaming place-- even with links to card stores nearby as part of a mall. Curious, Obito decided to check it out and make his way into the building. Loud music and flashing lights from several video games went off before Obito's eyes. Many kids from school were there-- taking the time to enjoy the place. Younger kids with their parents and even older folks were playing, indulging in the electric wonderland. Interesting place, Obito, he heard Panthermon's telepathic voice in the back of his mind. From up above, Panthermon had snuck into the arcade, using the rafters and bright lights for cover so he wasn't spotted. Him upon the catwalks of the lighting was a cake walk for him. From up there, he observed the events in the arcade. "Yeah, it might be worth checking out. We might even find new cards here," Obito suggested and walked over to one of the games. TO his surprise, he found a few games-- even one with digimon. And he found ones that used cards too. He heard romors of arcade games that worked using real world items as progress savers or boosts. He never played one of them before.

The Taito game station arcade was a beloved establishment, rival only to the Club Sega arcade that was almost right across from it. Hard to say which was better, but right now they were running a promotion. No matter who had better games, getting them for a better price was the most optimal use of your money and time. Exactly why Kimura was there, to use his time and money wisely and get a decent amount of his aggression out. They had one of his favorite games, an interactive kick-boxing simulator, although he had a heavier emphasis on boxing. Somehow, he could find a way to spend hours playing that one simple game.
The young man wasn't drawing a crowd for his phenomenal performance in physical athletics, not that he cared. Seems like some people were scared to ask him to leave the machine so they could play, given how he was using it. Shot after shot of rigorous physical strain continued, you could almost see the veins popping in his arms. Going barehanded on something like this, that didn't even have the best padding, definitely sent a message. Days had passed and he was still pissed off about what had transpired just this Monday. How could he not be, in the situation he was given, having finally gotten a taste of pushing himself to his limits.
A continued volley of punches went on as a new game started, right after he put in their brand of smart card. All the arcades were using them, phasing out the standard method of tokens and coins from years prior. Technology was still marching forward at an alarming rate, soon smart phones would be on par with computers. Just like how televisions were slowly emulating the movie screens everyone loved so much. Kimura didn't pay attention to things like this, only to the burning sensation in his hands and how he was using them. Yet another minute of full-on assault happened, yet another high score to aim to break. Now this was fun.
Kimura never took himself to be the competition type, but having had it be gone for such a long time in his life, maybe it's what he needed. A challenge to remind him that he was, in fact, better than other people. Better than some people in his gang, better than that American asshole whose face he couldn't wait to rearrange again. Every punch came with such a ferocity, leading from one solid hit to the next and bracing his guard against a non-attacking opponent. He wasn't about to allow himself to get sloppy, no, not again. Not after all this time of sitting on a shelf and deciding that he needed to take a break from what made him who he was. That was all you need to remind yourself just who you are, just what your passions are in life.

Kimura Kyōryoku Obito moved passed the boxing game, not really his thing-- along with the cool-looking guy as he cranked up the high score. NO clue came across on who the other people were, but he was interested to see what this place had to offer. He soon approached one of the machines-- and found it was a Digimon one. THis one was different from other games, as not only did it offer you a small amount of cards for playing, but it also read cards for specific bonuses in the game. A chance to win cards and play seemed like a nice offer for Obito. Though he was more familiar with the actual card game, it was interesting to see how this game worked. It gave you a selection of some canon Digimon-- some even from cards you scanned in-- and then you fight different foes. You used your cards for certain bonuses as you went, along with proper game responces at the right time. "This might be something worth trying, " Obito thought as he looked at the game. He paid the game cost and the screen lit up, with a flash of characters to play. Most of them were common ones from the different series. Interested, Obito selected Renamon. As the screen lit up as with the animated Renamon, he looked at the game options-- between one on one combat. Seeming like a basic fighting game, Obito played out Renamon's movements-- along with the set of skills she had as Obito fought one enemy digimon at a time. A few betamon, another agumon-- the game seemed similar to the popular console game 'super smash brothers' or something like that.

People continued to come and go, but he remained at his game of choice until it bored him. Took him a good while and he was starting to break a sweat by constantly throwing his hand at it. However, as the young man just kept going, something clicked inside his mind. This wasn't the type of competition he wanted, there was no need to compete against himself anymore. Forcing himself to push the score higher and higher lead to no pleasure on his part. Those numbers really didn't mean anything, they were just numbers after all.
After his last game, Kimura simply wiped his brow with his forearm, whatever little perspiration that came was now gone. He wasn't tired now, no, just hungry. Hungry for someone to go against and show off his skill, show off his prowess to that person. For some reason, someone had to validate that all he worked for wasn't for naught. All this training he undertook when he started had gone unused, letting it waste away along with himself. That was no longer the case, the young man wasn't about to leave himself on some shelf. He started walking, trying to find something familiar that he could challenge another person to.
Taking a long stroll around the building, that's when he noticed it, a digimon based fighting game. There was another already at the machine, but it looked like he was just warming up. Great, left them with no reason to tell him that they didn't want some company during the game. Walking forward, nothing broke his stride, no other person made an attempt to join in. Tapping the other young man on the shoulder, a simple question was asked, "Do you have room for one more?" It wasn't malicious or malevolent, but there was nothing to say he was being outright friendly. More like he was just trying to get the information he wanted to hear.

Kimura Kyōryoku Obito had finished the first round. The game appeared to have many formats. 1v1, but also a form of teamwork combat. The card mechanic did confuse him since the on-screen instructions flashed a bit too fast for him. But so far, so fun. He did know that the more you fought and gained points, the better chance for cards you would win at the end. THe games in Tokyo sure were different from any arcade Obito played in Kyoto. For the moment he was lost in the memory and focus of the game till he heard someone beside him. "Huh?" Obito said out of habit and turned to see the other black-haired kid much like himself. He seemed rather chill and was just curious if there was room. The game was also meant for 2 players, so that was available for him too. "Sure. The more, the merrier," Obito answered and stepped to the side to make more room. From up in the rafters, Panthermon quietly observed Obito and the new human who interacted with him. The giant cat simply layed down on the ledge and swished his tail leisurely like some sort of allycat. For him, he enjoyed people watching. While he was born a smart, sharp and insightful Digimon-- human beings still eluded him. He didn't understand a lot about them so he took the time to really observe them. As Obito finished his last level-- it was now the other person's time to enter. He would need to select the Digimon he wanted to control and what game mode he wanted to play as. If he wanted to work with Obito through the PVE option, or challenge him in PVP?

After it was decided that he could join, the young man remained silent as he looked over his choices. There was quite a roster of digimon, easily memorized from his early childhood and grade school. Took him a few minutes to look through all of them, patiently deciding on one that would be his preferable style. Not like he played many fighting games, just believing heavily in his sense of pacing and reaction timing. Gaomon, the blue, bipedal dog with boxing gloves, was his fitting choice for this encounter. Decent speed and power, but a bit on the fragile side, easy to get tossed around.
Now was left for him to just speak his intentions, a match between the two of them with this virtual simulation. It was hard to believe this meant something to either of them, but people have been playing games like this for decades. It was about combat knowledge, whether you thought about it or not, how you could plan your attacks properly. Each of these moves would have their own duration, how much time it took to make contact and how long it would take before it ended dishing out damage. Right now, Kimura didn't have this information, but it didn't deter him from what he wanted.
''A friendly match. One round, one knock out. I don't care what cards you plan on using, I'm going to use the stock cards that come with the machine," A simple set of statements to decide the stipulations they would be under. The young man didn't make much eye contact, just looking at his peer from a peripheral view. It sounded like he wasn't taking him seriously, but this was a facade for how it really was. He was handicapping himself to a simple heal, a single attack buff, and a lone Agumon summon to put on the table. The cards this machine accepted weren't exactly original Digi-Modify cards, but ones that had a magnetic bar around the back to interact with the scanner. These could be bought or won through the games illustrious story mode, not that he cared.
The game was actually well known among the trading card community, even if it didn't outright reward real cards. Instead, there was a leader board and an emailing list, where those who scored high enough would obtain prize packages. Cards in it were quite rare and hard to obtain through common means, unless you had the cash to pay for a ten thousand yen card. Not in his wildest dreams would he try to do something that insane and wasteful, far better things could be purchased with that kind of money. Card games were actually a pretty pricey commodity in this day and age, assuming you understood rarities and limited prints. These cards didn't remain out of print for long, otherwise it would ruin the tournament going groups, outside of a few cards that would cycle out due to changes in banlists and metas.

Kimura Kyōryoku Panthermon watched as he could see the screen pretty well from his vantage point. The boy who was with Obito seemed unextraordinary in appearance. He was a man of few words. Obito, when he wasn't thinking, could have been said the same, but Panthermon knew better. It was his first time seeing Digimon in the simple fashion of a video game, and perhaps that alone, was something Panthermon could enjoy to see how regular humans viewed Digimon. Obito didn't interact with his 'new friend' too much at first too. He was surprised when he opted to select the PVP option of the game, turning off the PVE actions Obito had been playing so far. Obito glanced at the guy briefly without much of a hum. Obito gave him the brief glimpse from behind his glasses, almost similar to what Kimura did. Obito reached into his pocket and pulled out three cards. "I'll use three as well. Seems like a reasonable rule of play," he said and put them on his side, propped up against the scanner module in front of the controls. Obito used the combo a lot-- a Gatomon's Cat Claw, and a Speed Booster card for his digimon-- the same combo he used on Panthermon on numerous occasions. It was his most used combo, but one that could be adapted to anything, so it wasn't as if he was showing his full hand. The last card he used was Super Optimizer, something that he could use to power Renamon up in a pinch. With his cards selected, the countdown began and Obito clutched the controls. His eyes focused on the screen as he took one final glance at the positions of the buttons. His hands gripped the control stick as the countdown came to 1... and the game started. Obito moved Renamon on the platform into a jumping pattern, moving up and onto another platform-- to dash above his target and move to jump below. With that done, he jolted the stick to the left, and hit the kick button-- causing Renamon to enter a skidding kick towards the Gaomon from behind.

His opponent made the choice to keep things fair by using only three cards. Seems like he was going to go up against someone with at least a little semblance of honor, not that it mattered. Whatever reason he did it didn't inspire any respect in Kimura, very few things could manage that by this point in his life. You don't live the way he does by respecting every person who's willing to come down to your level. Some might call that pity, but the young man didn't dwell on the action. Just take the information given and use it to your advantage when necessary.
The countdown came to start off their game, telling them when their controllers became responsive. While his black-haired peer took his time to maneuver his character, Kimura simply pressed the basic attack buttons. They were different punched, mostly straight and hooks, just remembering what input caused what action and how long they would take from start to finish. In this time, the Renamon came back down and started to skid for a low kick towards his character's legs. It may have been his first time playing this specific game, but he wasn't entirely inexperienced enough to know how to deal with this. The simple answer was to counter this attack, which had already been underway.
As the bipedal fox continued to slide towards his character of choice, the smaller digimon simply sprung up in a quick jump. Didn't go quite far, but it managed to get out of the way of the attack that was still in play. He wasn't entirely sure of his next move, didn't get any time to test out just how quickly he'd fall from mid-air yet. Pressing down and hitting with a simple attack button, the Gaomon responded with a diving fist. Nothing too painful, not yet sure of how much damage any of the attacks do or where their indicators are. Now this was exciting, the feeling of competition returning to him, with only the ability to learn.
No matter the outcome, whether his characters light physique fell in a floating manner or the Renamon continued its slide to safety, he'd have his own roll back. Guess that was his sort of dash in comparison, not like the slide he'd seen earlier. This only drove the idea in his mind that each choice had it's own play style and a way to control. That was the ideal in games like these, you wanted to have someone who you couldn't mirror in abilities and statistics. They may have been similar-- both being agility based digimon, but both serving their own niche. He knew his own, but did his opponent have a grasp on his own yet? The only question that would persist as the game continued.
His Gaomon awaited the next attack, trying to see exactly what the foe could do before moving forward. It was an intuitive strategy, one common in boxing that he hadn't taken the time to learn. Being a counter-puncher was suited to some, unlike himself, more of a quick brawler if anything. No reason to let the match continue for such a long time, that would only get boring. It wasn't that there was stamina he lacked, just the patience to see what his opponents strategy was. Just unload until you find your opening, that's how he was used to handling things. Maybe he could learn a new trick or two by emulating this quirk he imposed on himself.

Kimura Kyōryoku Obito saw his enemy's Gaomon move with a jump, cleverly avoiding Obito's directional low kick. In his mind's eye, He could see all of this as if it was happening in reality. Though the characters were computer generated, to him he could imagine it all moving with the same grace as if it was happening in real life. He took the hit from the downward dog-punch, but the damage was not too bad. It took far more damage to be declared a win though. The simple blow was just a reaction as he waited for the next move-- waiting for Obito to make the next move. It was a golden opportunity. Obito knew that his opponent was waiting, because why else take a guarded position and keep a distance even after that. But there was one golden opportunity to be using that kind of strategy-- it gave Obito the opportunity to use his Modify cards. With a quick grab away from the buttons, he took out the first card and placed it on the card shaped sensor in front of him. "Try to dodge this..." he slapped it down and the card reader scanned it with a small laser. The card flashed on Obito's side of the screen to reveal the Gatomon Cat Claws. It was then that Obito's character shined with a bonus. "Attacks now deal light damage"-- of course the power of the cards worked differently than they would in a real digimon fight or even in the card game, but it gave an opening. Once more, Obito maneuvered and jumped to another platform-- only this time, he jumped down right on top of the Gaomon. with a smash of his buttons, he delivered a series of small jabs-- but each blow now did extra damage thanks to the gatomon card that could even damage a guarding character slightly. The card only had a duration of perhaps 10 seconds, but it was all that Obito needed to start an attack. Perhaps it was a too obvious attack, but he didn't show all of his tricks till the middle of the fight. The one thing you never expect is a counter-attack when it looks like your on the offensive.

His attack went off without flaw, its suddenness making it all the more easy to land. After having rolled away to get a considerable margin of distance, both fighters stood there. It wasn't exactly tense, both were still at a relatively similar points of health, they were just back to that planning stage. Neither player had moved a muscle in their fingers to execute any actions, they just stared at the screen. What was he going to do? That's all he waited for, what had the next move been and how to deal with it swiftly.
Before any blows could continue, his foe spoke about his dodge attempts as they laid down a card. A quick use at the beginning of the match made it hard to tell whether this would best be saved for later, but he allowed it to commence. Its effect had modified the basic attack of the character to dealing 'light' damage, whether that was an attribute modifier or a damage modifier had yet to be seen. Maybe it would've been best to look through some tutorials before deciding on this course of action. If it was the 'light' affinity, there wouldn't be much to worry about, Gaomon didn't seem like a digimon to be too greatly affected by the change. The quickness of the cards effects, however, made it hard to move out of the way, instead opting to hold his guard up still.
In games like this, these guard states would diminish over time, causing him to take more damage as he stood there. Given the attack was overhead from him, the young man opted for a roll back just like he'd done previously, having taken a good series of hits before being able to do so. He noted the odd buffer between moving and guarding before trying to compete with an attack of his own to knock the Renamon back. Rolling forward in another split second, his thumb flashed between two buttons, one which meant to jab straight and another that acted like a hook. His expectations were more than matched, being given a move he didn't even account for.
Obviously, this being a fighting game, characters had combos, which had probably been simplified for children. What transpired was a spinning motion with the blue akita inu spreading out is arms, a move that consisted of a shout to tell of its actions. "Double Backfist!" The game shouted in vigor, recreating an animated voice with slight gruffness to denote which character had done it. Both fists would attempt to slam into the fox-like foe, one right after the other. It was a sharp, quick attack just like one would expect from the smaller fighter. Quite a miraculous accident on his part, trying to keep in mind these sort of things. Maybe he should watch the other players controller too, to know when they planned on a similar set of moves.

Kimura Kyōryoku The combination of the button skills was indeed a good move on his opponent's part. Obito had tried the first dive attack but failed as his opponent rolled back, which was clever move and one that some people wouldn't instinctively use. However Obito's attack failed with only very light effect-- and his opponent then moved to attack a frontal assault using the 'Double Backhand" as Gaomon spun his little fists and charged for Renamon. Obito quickly moved the stick down and blocked-- which was probably the only smart thing to do against a digimon's signature attack. The attack did smack Obito's health bar down. Even more, the attack knocked Renamon back-- but it was then that Obito took action. As Renamon was knocked back, he jerked the control stick forward-- causing the fox to flip in mid air-- and then he smashed all three buttons to release an ultimate attack of his own. In mid air, Renamon glowed and extended her arms to release it. "Diamond Storm." The barrage of light shards went flying for Gaomon-- but that was one effect Obito worked on as he used his second card. Speed Driver. "Speed Activate," he simply said and slapped the card on the reader. The ability card responded and it sped up Renamon. While Kimura might be distracted by the shard attack of Diamond Storm, Obito had Renamon run right behind the swarm with the enhanced speed and with the Cat Claws still active. Even if he blocked or dodged-- Obito's new speed allowed his character to scale distance faster and now he delivered a fast button mashing barrage of strikes with the enhanced speed and claw attacks. Kimura would be able to respond to one assault, but not easily done to avoid both with Obito using speed to his advantage to break past Gaomon's defense. The heated battle was soon noticed on screen, and a few people were coming over to see the two battle.

His unexpected mistake was more than beneficial as it broke his opponents guard with ease. Even knocked them back a slight bit, but there wasn't much time to react afterwards. The controls had locked, most likely a drawback from constantly spamming combos. Of course, this put him right in harms way as a multitude of sharp, diamond-shaped projectiles met the Gaomon's frame. Not great, but not the worst wound to suffer, a decent amount of them missed his character, hitting the platform above him. Usually, there would be a counterattack ready, but something changed the flow of their battle.
His opponent scanned yet another card, one that boosted his speed and could be used to accelerate the duration of the control lock. Although Kimura could already move his character, the newfound agility of his foe caught up with him quickly. While he'd been following his movements, that'd only meant they'd been facing each other now. Here came the quick barrage of physical strikes with those cat claws, first trying to dodge out of their way with a simple roll. It should've been hard for the Renamon to catch up with what was now a blue blur, rolling similarly to another arcade character. This wasn't the case, however, all of those attacks pursued forward, even as he got closer to the edge.
While the final blows were commencing, there was a simple guard put in place as the young man tried to figure out what to do. He'd had his back against the metaphorical wall, much given there hadn't been one. Another step and he's risking the match entirely. Now, something came to mind in that moment, a button he'd forgone using this whole time. Outside of basic attacks, there was also a grab button, which could be his one saving grace. Tactically, it was his best move, even outside of the thought of danger. They'd only been halfway through the game as of right now.
Might be a bit of an anti-climax, but being thrown over the edge was the plan right now. Pressing the joystick forward, the Gaomon aimed to get the yellow lupine-humanoid into its grips. With a simple throttle backwards, the digimon initiated a simple hip toss, switching positions at the end of the maneuver. It probably wasn't the furthest throw one could do, probably having to wait until someone was at critical health to accomplish. Possibly miscalculated and ended up slamming it right against the edge instead of off of it. Either way, after the completion of the technique, whether he'd managed to get his hands around the other fighter, he'd opt to roll away from the edge.

Kimura Kyōryoku The diamond storm should have been a means to do some damage to the Gaomon and he charged in for the kill-- but for Obito, he didn't register this as simply a battle game, but a fighting game-- and that was when the player decided to do something rather clever. When he was up to the edge, Obito attempted to deliver a physical attack with his Diamond Storm a split-second in front of him. It was then that the player did a combo to throw his opponent. He grabbed Renamon and tossed him overhead-- leading off the platform to throw them off. OBito panicked and strained on the joystick to push her back up, but it was a clear fall. He hit the jump button, attempting to double jump--- --- but the gap was too far and Obito's character fell. Obito frowned as the machine made a low-beeping sound, showing that he had fallen off the map, resulting in a round lost. Clearly, Obito wasn't happy and sighed. From above, Panthermon gave a soft snicker, seeing his partner lose and the reaction he had.

The tides had turned, just as the digital characters back did upon concluding it's actions. There went Renamon, hurtling towards its demise with an amazing effort to remain in the game. Such struggle garnered the player no reward, who wore their loss in battle with shame. Grow the fuck up, we're about to graduate high school and he's sulking over some dumb game? There was something to learn from all of this, but it wasn't directly noticeable. Maybe Kimura could spell it out for him.
Originally, there was an attack launched that could've caused a change in the outcome. Being so close, however, is what lead them here. Within the time it took for Renamon to initiate its command, the Blue dog had him. Rather simple, but no one expects the simple hits in the long run. Taking his hands off the controller, the young man shook his hands and cracked his knuckles. Very faint sounds came from them, they weren't too tense throughout this endeavor. The coal-haired male's expression remained constant, wasn't quite amused nor disappointed.
The concept of victory was not new to him, even in this format. With inexperience, the thought of the outcome didn't cross his mind as something spectacular. Maybe it was just a forgone conclusion given his opponents choice in cards. His head veered towards Obito's direction slightly, "The worst thing you can do after losing in battle is act sorry about it." Just a little bit of coaching advice he'd heard about, earlier on in his attempt as an amateur. There was truth in these words though, you can't learn from your mistakes if you don't analyze them.
Part of it might have been his reliance on these props they were allowed. If your only strategy is that you hold a weapon in your hands, what happens when the weapon is gone? Sometimes, it goes beyond sheer ability, you have to be observant as towards what the enemy's goal is. If it's simply victory, you need a means to achieve it. Brute force is not your immediate go to, ironically enough a lesson learned when he was too busy being angry to seek other options. That could've been far more humiliating an experience, luckily that hadn't been the case.
Seemed like this was over, Kimura hadn't been asked for a rematch. May as well find something more enjoyable, like a food court. Before taking any steps away from the game, he gave a simple farewell. "My name is Kimura Kyōryoku, by the way," As cliche as it was, he know knew the name of the man that defeated him. Possibly the longest running trope in Japanese culture, dating back to the sengoku period. With that, the young man began to depart, remaining in earshot long enough for any response to be made.

Kimura Kyōryoku Obito was disappointed he lost. He felt his action would have played out right, but his enemy threw him and it was over. It felt cheap to him. His fist balled up in frustration-- but it got worst for him when the person next to him told him the worst thing he could do was act sorry about losing. Obito glared at the guy, unsure what that was suppose to mean. Obito wasn't sorry he lost-- but disappointed in himself that he couldn't pull through with the strategy he hoped to win with. The defiant glare showed he wasn't in the best of moods to be patronized about. However... he knew better than to allow those things to get to him. It was true, and he just hated to do it. He lost too much of late, he hated to keep losing. He took a deep breath to calm himself, keeping his own emotions under control. "I hate to admit it but your right..." he said, still looking disappointed. "I'd play a rematch if you want..." It was then that the guy gave his name. KImura. Obito returned to look back at him. He removed his glasses and pocketed his cards. "Obito Kamigawa, nice to meet you..." he said. However, the guy was soon leaving. "Hey wait a minute!" he tried to stop him, not about to let this action end like that. He hated being talked down to and this hardly seemed like fair sportsmanship.
